—Eternal Palace, City of Celestials, Alfheim.

To say she had nothing to do, up here at the peak of the world, would be an understatement as vast as the skies above the heavens and the abyss below the depths of Hel.

When she left her bed this morning, she moved only enough to sit by her favorite spot next to the windowsill. There, she sat watching, staring out to see the sun rise up to illuminate the city of chalk below. She followed it with her eyes as the orb slowly rose higher and higher into the sky, from peering just above the clouds that always blocked her view of the lower world at first, until it reached a point above even the tallest tower present in the city.

And then at some point, it would reach a point where she could no longer see it from the place she sat by the windowsill. But she was not disheartened by this, for she knew that as long as she sat here in this spot long enough, the sun would rise again once more and she would be able to enjoy all the beauty it radiated all over again.

So she waited. She waited until the sky went dark. She waited until the night went bright. And finally, she waited until the little jewel in the distance called the sun rose in front of her again.

This was good, she thought. She liked the sun. It would be very boring if she could not watch it struggle its way up the sky like that every day. It was a weird little thing. For what reason did it have to always climb up in the sky like that? For what reason did it have to always show up in the same spot without hurry or urgency? She wanted to know the reason. That was why it amused her.

And so she watched the sun rise another thirty times before she wandered to her bed again.

That was enjoyable, she thought to herself about the way she spent her time. She preferred to wait by the windowsill, that way she would be able to see the very moment the sun peeked through the layer of clouds, but at the same time she once read in a tome that growing girls should get plenty of rest. While she did not know what a “growing girl” was, she assumed it was in reference to people who still had room to grow.

So, at least for now, she would lie down here and wait silently until the next opportunity came.
